starting from the thresholds of human perception, raster. schwellen examines relations between individual phenomena. a grid of 16 light lines - which number refers to the hearing threshold of human hearing, in which sound waves in space transition from a temporal to an auditory perceptible level - is manipulated by a multi-channel composition in its light intensity. the sound moves simultaneously on a vertical and horizontal axis; it is represented by the light in its dynamic distribution in space as well as in its energy content. the combination of temporal, auditory and visual structure creates an immersive experience for the visitor and interacts with the architecture of the space.

raster-noton.unun @ ctm 2010, wmf club, berlin, germany. wmf floor 2 - in collaboration with raster-noton and transmediale atom™ (DE) AOKI takamasa (JP) senking (DE) grischa lichtenberger (DE) raster-noton. unun in 2009, raster-noton embarked on a voyage into the outer reaches of the periodic table. nine vinyl-only ep's will appear in the unun series, each of which takes it's name from the vanishingly unstable elements which are conjured into being by cutting-edge laboratories around the world. these are certainly cutting-edge productions, made by artists new to the label. grischa lichtenberger - polishs up a sound palette which comes from mundane domestic field recordings: the sound of a sliding tabletop, the drone of a broken electric motor. with them, he creates crisp, angular constructions which ring like tinnitus in the upper registers and twitch like parkinson´s in the bass. AOKI takamasa - strands tiny vocal fragments in undulating currents of liquid, elliptical funk. atom™ - silver turned to gold, maximal replaced minimal, 4/4 became 5/4 while 3/4 remained 3/4, house became home, attack: decay became sustain without release, void turned horizon, tech? no! senking - varies and experiments with a frightening diversity of sounds. he reveals the pieces as sound-collages, as quotes, which seem to refer to splatter movie and film noir. following the tremendous plot of his endtime-sujet, he persistently welds together sound spaces in order to compress them later into overwhelming drone-sounds. ctm.10 - overlap - sound & other media with the theme overlap – sound & other media, the festival continues the discussions begun during the highly praised jubilee edition in january 2009 regarding the situations, terms and future prospects of self-determined music creation and experimental audiovisual cultures. while the focus in 2009 was on the internal structures of independent music and media cultures, overlap will broaden the scope to interfaces between music and other creative and economic fields. ctm.10 takes a critical look at the opportunities and risks of developments where media and creative disciplines meld increasingly together, and where previously fixed roles are now in flux. the discussion on how mutations in music culture should be framed continues.

container m_nus / raster-noton the collaboration of the labels m_nus and raster-noton dates back to the year 1999, when richie hawtin was invited by carsten nicolai to take part in the "new forms" cd/performance project that was staged at galerie für zeitgenössische kunst in leipzig, germany. since then both labels have shown their interest to finally launch a collaborative project. in the last ten years both m_nus and raster-noton have set high standards of sound and visual presentation. their strong affinity to minimalist design and a compelling musical output of their catalogue has since been parallel in the labels' philosophy. especially the "concept" series of m_nus and the »20' to 2000« series of raster-noton have been landmarks of minimal electronic music and defined the start into the new century. a collaboration hence seems to be overdue and consistent. container is an event series seen as intersection of conceptual ideas of the labels. the two evenings will cut the usual club night performative scheme of solo performers by introducing an experimental platform of performative interaction that promotes the labels' overlapping conceptual structures to form a unique laboratory of sound. the open character of the project might give the chance to further develop it in the future...

e-flux was pleased to present raster-noton. shop @ e-flux, 41 essex street, new york. opening: tuesday, may 26th with a special performance by carsten nicolai (alva noto) and olaf bender (byetone) raster-noton's investigations into sound frequencies and sequences are principally developed in the field of music, but often cross over into the visual arts. using digital signal processing as their primary medium (often in combination with moving images and graphics) the label's many releases and live performances explore minimal, modular, and concrete approaches to the structure of sound and its possibilities for being activated and manipulated as a material form. "while their late 20th century forebears applied the aesthetics of processes and mechanisms from manufacturing and industry to their craft, so many of the raster-noton label's publications emulate the unseen operations and transactions of our era – the flow of information."(http://www.boomkat.com/article.cfm?id=23) for the shop, the archives of the chemnitz-based raster-noton label were presented at e-flux in the form of a record shop, albeit one without a commercial component. comprised of publications (featuring raster-noton's distinct approach to graphic design), music cds (to be displayed as physical objects), and sound (for listening on mp3 players), the raster-noton archive offered a panoramic view of the label's output of nearly 100 releases, or 90 hours of audio material. bender and nicolai's installation "white line light" provided lighting for the shop via a handmade, neon gas-filled tube that reacted to raster-noton compositions. the shop was the second in a new series of exhibitions at e-flux project space at 41 essex street, lower level. the shop remained at e-flux through the end of july, 2009.
